Askam keep hold of Barton Townley Cup
KRISTIAN Tyson five-star show saw Barton Townley Cup holders romp to a 58-10 win over Barrow Island in the final at Craven Park on Wednesday.
The outstanding half-back notched up a personal tally of 38 points – five tries and nine conversions – as Askam overran a game Island in the 36th final of the competition.
Former Barrow Raiders player Tyson, awarded the Bob Brady trophy for his man-of-the-match performance, seized every chance presented to him and used his pace to run through the Island defence almost at will.
But it wasn’t just Tyson’s knockout performance that saw the trophy return to Fallowfield Park, with his team-mates too strong in virtually every department, and the gulf between the teams, who play in the National Conference Division Two and Three, was exposed in a one-sided second half in which they ran in 42 points.
Island, to their credit, tried hard to come to terms in the match but could not hold Askam, who defeated in the final Millom last year.
The winners showed their intent early in the game but were held short of the line by a strong Island defence.
But when Dan Sayle collected deep in his own half, there was no stopping him as he glided into space before releasing Tom Askew, who ran clear to score, with Tyson kicking the first of his 10 conversion attempts.
Askam quickly added more points through Tom Hopkins, but Island fought back gamely with Jamie Curtis reducing the deficit, however Blain Marwood was unable to add the kick
Another exciting passage of play saw Island go close to putting further points on the board, however Jake Stockdale was unable to hold onto the pass as he went for the try line.
Askam then seized the initiative with Tyson scoring his first touch down for 16-4 lead at half time.
Tyson quickly got back into the groove after the interval, stretching Askam’s lead to 22-4 after converting his own try and that led to an avalanche of points as Island were unable to stem the flow.
Jake Spedding went over, followed by Tyson, Tom Hopkins, Sayle and Tyson again before Island got a contribution try through Ali McEwan with Matt Parkinson adding the extras.
But a Tyson double burst confirmed it for Askam, who have now notched their fourth win in the final of the competition.
