Toal and Hulme lead Barrow Raiders to win over All Golds
BARROW’S unblemished home League One record for the season remained intact after carving out a 36-6 win against Gloucestershire All Golds on Saturday.
Two tries each from winger Shane Toal and centre Declan Hulme plus others from Martin Aspinwall, Nathan Mossop and Ryan Fieldhouse, and four Lewis Charnock goals sealed the victory in a match played out in wet and windy conditions.
Barrow had the best of starts after loose forward Aspinwall led a burst of three tries in six minutes.
All Golds struck back with their first meaningful attack when Jack Mitchell went over, but the Raiders confirmed their superiority after the break with a further three touchdowns.
Raiders coach Paul Crarey said after the match: “We started the game really well, we needed to because it was going to get slippery and slidy.
“It was very difficult to hold the ball and be fluent with it, but we managed to score some great tries early on.”
He added: “I think that was a little bit of a story of the game, stop-start, and that’s what you get when teams are playing us, trying to slow us down.
“We started to turn the ball back on the edges and we got some great joy there.
“We executed pretty well, we weren’t going to be slick because it poured down before and during the game. We are just happy to get the win.”
Crarey felt his side was never in danger of losing to All Golds and said his side defensively were outstanding.
He praised the versatile Jarrad Stack who moved into the centres, replacing Eze Harper.
“I thought Jarrad Stack in the right centre was absolutely outstanding, he put out a great ball for Shane Toal to score,” said Crarey. “He can play anywhere, he can play middle, he can play edge, but I thought today he was really good for us.”
The game also marked the return of forward Bradd Crellin, who had been out of action with injury since the Newcastle Thunder clash on Good Friday.
Barrow are at home to Oxford next Saturday (kick-off 6.30pm), before heading to Whitehaven for the final match of the League One phase with the Super 8s kicking off at the end of this month.
