Barrow romp to cup victory
BARROW RAIDERS 60 ROCHDALE MAYFIELD 6
RYAN Fieldhouse may have scored four tries, but Danny Morrow stole the show with a towering performance as Barrow Raiders eventually eased their way into the Challenge Cup fourth round yesterday.
Former Walney Central amateur Morrow, whose delicious pass set up Fieldhouse for his hat-trick, got over the whitewash in the second half, but by then the Raiders had ensured their name went into the hat for Tuesday’s draw.
However, the Raiders didn’t have it all their way, especially in the first half, against enthusiastic opponents Rochdale Mayfield who, at one stage, led 6-4.
But once Barrow, with the wind in their favour after the interval, found their rhythm there was going to be only one winner as the Raiders completed a cup double over their rivals, having knocked them out of the League One Cup last week.
Fieldhouse led the try-fest at Craven Park and there were touchdowns from Declan Hulme and Jarrad Stack, who both scored a brace, while there were others from Bradd Crellin and Lewis Charnock, who also kicked eight goals.
After facing difficult conditions in the first half Barrow cut loose after the break with Fieldhouse soon adding to his try tally, going over in the 43rdminute with his next coming courtesy of another explosive Morrow run with Charnock converting both touchdowns.
National Conference Premier League side Mayfield proved to be more than a match for Barrow in the opening half and they soon forced the issue but Barrow were the first to put points on the board.
Charnock burst through, pushing towards the line where he was met by a Mayfield reception committee, the ball broke clear in the tackle and the ever-alert Fieldhouse picked up to dive over.
Undeterred, Mayfield once again gained a foothold in Barrow territory, close to the line and a clever pass from Declan Sheridan set up Seta Tala who went in under the posts, with Zac Hartley converting.
Both sides continued to battle it out and Barrow made the most of a chance midway through the half when the impressive Morrow smashed into space, with his strong driving run halted close to the line. Possession went the way of the home side and Charnock set Bradd Crellin up to score and then added the extras.
Barrow stretched their lead two minutes before the interval after Hulme touched down courtesy of a Fieldhouse sweeping pass to set up the gap.
Coach Paul Crarey will have been satisfied with the result in a competition in which his hopes to see his side progress.
