Battleship Brennan ready to sink Raiders rivals
FANS’ favourite Brad Brennan reckons promotion in on the cards for Barrow Raiders.
One thing is certain, the blockbusting prop, nicknamed “Battleship” by supporters on the Craven Park terraces for his destructive style, is determined to play his part.
The 23-year-old has agreed terms for another year and is keen to play more than a bit part during last season.
Brennan, returned for his second spell at Barrow last season, but his start was hampered because of a lack of pre-season.
This time round he’s made the most of training during the winter, which is good news for Barrow but bad for rivals, with opposition teams finding him a real handful during his explosive moments on the pitch last season.
After coming in when the 2016 campaign had been underway, Brennan, once got his fitness up to speed, played a big part in Barrow’s promotion bid which saw them agonisingly just miss out.
“I am looking to get as much game time as I can this year,” he said. “Obviously with me coming in a bit later last year my fitness, in my eyes, wasn’t where it should have been, but with getting a full pre-season behind me this year I am hoping to come in flying.
“I am feeling a lot fitter in myself and I am just looking forward to ripping in now and hopefully getting one of those regular spots because there is a lot of competition, especially in the front row.
“But I think that’s just going to bring out the best in everyone because you have got to be on top form to keep your shirt.
Although Barrow have lost the likes of players like Liam Harrison (retirement) and Chris Hankinson (joined Swinton) head coach Paul Crarey has brought in some great talent like Jarrad Stack, Brett Carter, Tom Walker and Declan Hulme from Workington. Plus St Helens half back Lewis Charnock, who was with Bradford Bulls last season, and talented youngster Ryan Johnston.
Brennan is focused on the season ahead, and he said: “I am just looking forward to ripping in now.”
Asked if he felt promotion was on the cards, he added: “I honestly do. Training is going well and everyone is mixing in with each other.
“I think this year with the lads that have been retained and the new lads that have come in we can go that step further and make it his year.”
Expect Battleship Brennan to carry on with his all guns blazing style of play.
As he added: “I am just looking to have the same impact, but last longer than what I have been doing.
“I am ready for the pre-season friendlies, but so are the other lads. Everyone has got to show Cresta and the fans what they are made of.
“I think we’re going to be the team to watch.
“With the squad we’ve got, with the management in Cresta, we will be there at the end of the season.”
Fans will be able to get a first taste of Raiders action when they take on a Barrow and District Select at Craven Park this Sunday (kick-off 2pm).
Entry is £10 adults, £7 concessions and £3 children.
