Walney Duo sign new deal for the Raiders
PREPARATIONS for next season’s League One campaign have taken another positive step forward with quality packmen Danny Morrow and Matty Holmes committing to Barrow Raiders.
The former Walney Central duo, who both signed two year deals when they joining the Craven Park club last season, have activated clauses in their contracts to stay on next year.
It’s a move which has delighted joint Barrow Raiders director of rugby Andy Gaffney and quickly follows that of full-back Ryan Fieldhouse agreeing to stay on.
Raiders have also recently swooped for quality players, St Helens half-back Lewis Charnock and Workington Town second rower Jarrad Stack – both of whom have signed for two years – as the club continue to build for 2017 and a push for promotion.
Gaffney is pleased to keep hold of quality players Morrow and Holmes, and he said: “It is important that we keep developing our local players as they will eventually become the spine of our team.
“These two, although still learning, have had a great season and they can only get better if they continue to work hard.”
Holmes received the most improved player award at the club’s annual presentation night held at the Central Club, Barrow, earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Furness Raiders will be aiming to maintain their 100 per cent College Rugby League record when they head to the north east where they take on Tyne Met College-Newcastle Thunder Academy at Kingston Park this Wednesday.
The Barrow-based level three academy side scored a 29-16 win over Midland Hurricanes in their opener at Loughborough, and claiming a nail-biting 25-24 victory over Wakefield College at Craven Park last week.
