Blockbusting forward agrees 1-year Raiders deal
VETERAN prop Oliver Wilkes has signed for a further year with Barrow Raiders.
The deal will be seen as a huge boost to the squad ahead of the 2017 campaign after Barrow just missed out in the promotion play-off against Toulouse Olympique last Saturday.
Former Scotland World Cup player Wilkes returned to his hometown club from Leigh Centurions this year, and during that time has helped Barrow have a strong season in the Kingstone Press League One.
Barrow Raiders joint director of rugby Andy Gaffney is delighted to have the Ulverstonian on board again.
He said of the Raiders captain: “He has extended his contract for a year which is great for us.
“He’s great to have in the camp, it is great for the young lads to have a player of such great experience around.
“It demands a presence and professionalism that we want in the club for years to come.”
Gaffney feels Wilkes’ wealth of experience is going to be very important for next year as the Raiders bid to get in the Championship.
He said: “It is going to be very important that we keep hold of the senior players in the side and the nucleus of the squad together and build and improve as we go on.”
